Sand mining incident impacting Trempealeau River

MADISON – An incident at the High Crush LLC industrial sand mining facility in Whitehall in Trempealeau County is impacting the Trempealeau River in western Wisconsin.

The incident is still under investigation, but according to the company, a bulldozer slipped into a pond holding process water, and the water in the pond was released to free the operator. No fatalities occurred and the company has stopped the initial discharge.

Process water and sediment flowed into an unnamed tributary and then into the Trempealeau River. Cleanup of the sediment is ongoing and Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources staff continue to monitor the water quality of the tributary and the Trempealeau River.
