GREEN BAY – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is planning to conduct prescribed burning during the coming weeks on various properties in east central Wisconsin. The burns will take place only if appropriate weather conditions exist. The properties include:
- Glacial Habitat Restoration Areas in Winnebago and Fond du Lac Counties
- Greenwood Wildlife Area in Waushara County
- Eldorado Marsh Wildlife Area in Fond du Lac County
- Grand River Marsh Wildlife Area in Green Lake and Marquette Counties
Prescribed burning is part of an ongoing effort to preserve and restore the landscape found within DNR properties throughout Wisconsin. These burns reduce leaf litter, improve wildlife habitat, redistribute nutrients and help control invasive species.
The window for conducting prescribed burns is relatively small due to the special weather conditions required. The moisture level of groundcover, wind speed, wind direction and relative humidity must be just right for a safe, successful burn. Based on these factors, burns may or may not occur. Local police and fire officials are notified when and where burns will take place.
