A burning multi-storey house collapsed in the center of the Brazilian metropolis of Sao Paulo. According to preliminary information, one person was killed and three are reported missing. The only residents of the decommissioned 26-storey building was were 80 squatters
Evacuees told the police that part of the building’s inhabitants managed to escape on time. Media reports differ on the actual number of residents of the building, the number of which could have been up to 100 people, others say up to 50 families were registered to live.
The police discovered the body of the man died in the fire, three persons are reported missing. The fire is believed to have originated on the fifth floor, presumably because of the blast of a gas tank, and quickly swept through the entire building.
The fire passed on to the neighboring building, but there is no threat of its collapse. The fire site and several surrounding quarters are cordoned off by police and firemen.
According to the information provided by the Sao Paulo Fire Service, at least 160 personnel and 57 units of equipment were involved in the operation.
