German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said on Monday that Europe cannot any longer rely on the USA and the White House.
Maas made this statement after Trump described the US-European Union relations as follows: “I think the European Union is a foe, what they do to us in trade.”
The German foreign minister commented on the situation to the publishing group Funke, which owns several popular newspapers and magazines: “We can no longer completely rely on the White House. To maintain our partnership with the USA we must readjust it. The first clear consequence can only be that we need to align ourselves even more closely in Europe.”
“Europe cannot afford to be divided, no matter how critical the critical statements are and how absurd are tweets,” Maas added.
Last Wednesday, Maas said that Europeans are “not prisoners” of Moscow or Washington. The statement was in response at Donald Trump’s allegation that Berlin was “captive” to Russia.
